Design and fashion: from furniture to the miniskirt
Britain has produced many great designers. Three stand out in different fields, alongside three recent fashion designers:
| Thomas Chippendale | An 18th-century designer of furniture. |
|---|---|
| Clarice Cliff | Designed pottery (ceramics) in the Art Deco style. |
| Sir Terence Conran | A 20th-century interior designer. |
| Fashion | Well-known recent fashion designers: Mary Quant, Alexander McQueen and Vivienne Westwood. |
Each of these names has a story. Mary Quant is often called the "mother of the miniskirt" because she made it fashionable in 1960s London, although who actually invented it is disputed. Westwood brought punk into fashion in the 1970s, echoing the punk movement in music at the end of that decade. And Conran opened the shop Habitat in 1964, bringing modern design into ordinary homes.
