J K Rowling

Her Harry Potter books for children have been hugely popular around the world. She now writes novels for adults as well.

A few of these writers come with a story. Scrooge is the main character in Dickens's A Christmas Carol, and Mr Micawber comes from David Copperfield, where he keeps saying that something will "turn up". Conan Doyle studied medicine in Edinburgh, and Sherlock Holmes's sharp powers of observation are said to be based on one of his teachers, Dr Joseph Bell. And Evelyn Waugh was a man; to make things more confusing, his first wife was also called Evelyn, and their friends called them "He-Evelyn" and "She-Evelyn".
